Habitat and Species Conservation-
Matthew Koenig attended Florida State University and received his undergraduate degree in Biological Science. While working toward his degree, he interned with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Bear Management Program in Tallahassee. After completing several other internships throughout the Southeast, he got a job as a Biologist II at Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area. He worked there for two years before becoming the area manager at Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area. For the past three years, Matthew has managed three small properties in Brooksville. These include Chinsegut WEA, Perry Oldenburg WEA and Janet Butterfield Brooks WEA. These public lands are primarily managed to meet the life history requirements of the gopher tortoise, but Matthew and his crew actively restore sandhill, upland pine and a variety of other natural community types to benefit a host of rare or imperiled wildlife species found throughout Central Florida.
